U.S. Senior champs…., again
Rice Lake Curling Club team won the United States Senior Championship for the fourth time, breaking the team’s own record of three wins. Displaying the championship trophy are team members, from left, Larry Sharp, Bill Kind, Don Drost and Greg Dahl. They captured first place in competition held jointly by the Wauwautosa and Kettle Moraine curling clubs last week that featured teams of curlers age 55 years or older. The foursome does not curl together as a team at Rice Lake because they each have their own team, but they join forces to compete in the national event. The team went undefeated in the competition among 30 teams from Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin. No other team in the 35-year history of the event has won more than two championships. Before this year’s victory, the team earned top honors in 2005, 2007, and 2009.
All of the Rice Lake teams that were entered in the competition did very well with all three reaching the finals.! The Dale Stoik rink made up of Dale Stoik, Kraig Smith, Mel Pearson and Don Peterson were the winners of the 4th event. The Larry Anderson rink made up of Larry Anderson, Gary Schieffer, Bob Stanonik and Gary Amundson were the runner ups in the 5th event.
